Established as a Communauté de Communes (Community of Communes) since January 1st 2001, the Pays d'Azay-le-Rideau consists of 12 rural communes with 12,175 inhabitants over an area of 230 km².
Located in the Indre-et-Loire département,
the Community of Communes of the Pays d'Azay-Le-Rideau lies around 30 kilometres southwest of Tours. |
Marked by the presence of the Loire and Indre rivers, the Pays d'Azay-le-Rideau unites and combines talents and expertise from across an area that is rich in natural beauty and heritage.
The intercommunal organisation is therefore structured around 12 communes:
Azay-le-Rideau, Bréhémont, La Chapelle-aux-Naux,
Cheillé, Lignières-de-Touraine, Pont-de-Ruan,
Rigny-Ussé, Rivarennes, Saché, Thilouze, Vallères
and Villaines-les-Rochers.
These communes have been grouped together as an intercommunal body in order to develop and manage joint projects involving town and country planning and development. |

This is how the Syndicat Intercommunal à la Carte du Ridellois (SIVOM) [Intercommunal Association for the Azay-le-Rideau area] came to be formed in 1986.
The SIVOM's areas of activity gradually expanded: taking responsibility for tourism in 1988 and the management of a CRIL (Regional Contract for Local Initiatives) in 1995. In 1997, its economic credentials were asserted by the creation of the Touraine Apple Juice project
Between 1986 and 2001, the concept of regionalism became increasingly important and the emphasis was switched from technical development to regional development. |
|
On January 1st 2001, this movement resulted in the SIVOM's transformation into a Community of Communes with nine areas of responsibility:
|
- Community land use planning
- Economic development
- Community housing policy
- Development and maintenance of public highways on behalf of the commune
- Social policy
- Community cultural policy
- Community amenities
- Environmental protection and promotion
- Creation and monitoring of contractual policies
